Scotland’s Journey Toward Being Trauma Informed
Over the past decade, Scotland has been progressing a national effort to embed trauma-informed and trauma-responsive practice across public services. This presentation will explore Scotland’s experience of implementing trauma-informed practice across complex service landscapes, particularly within Local Authorities and Health & Social Care Partnerships. It will highlight how implementation is rarely linear and must adapt to the differing contexts, capacities and priorities of local teams, services and communities. Rather than a single prescriptive model, Scotland’s approach has emphasised flexibility, allowing areas to begin where they are and progress at a pace that is sustainable. The session will introduce the national Roadmap for Trauma-Informed Practice, a practical implementation framework designed to support organisations to reflect on their current position and identify meaningful next steps. Particular attention will be given to how the Roadmap can be adapted to suit different organisational contexts and levels of readiness. The presentation will also highlight the role of the National Trauma Leads Network, a formal strategic network bringing together Trauma Lead Officers, and other key contacts, from across Scotland. The Network aims to strengthen the relationship between local Trauma Lead Officers and national NTTP partners to enable a coordinated, joined up approach; strengthen strategic support and raise the profile of the trauma agenda; and provide a collective voice as a Network on relevant issues to inform and improve policy and practice at local and national level. Drawing on both national collaboration and local experiences, this session will reflect on key learning from Scotland’s journey and offer practical insights for partners working to embed trauma-informed system change.cia
