The Hidden Work of Prisons in Trauma-Affected Society
Prisons are filled with people carrying significant trauma and that's staff and prisoners alike. Yet this reality often goes unrecognised and unsupported, limiting our ability to create real change. Staff Perspective: prison staff work to support rehabilitation while managing intense pressure, emotional strain, and personal trauma. How can we help change when the system itself is overwhelmed and understaffed. Prisoner Perspective: many prisoners have lived through lifelong trauma, hardship, and lack of dignity or understanding. For them, prison can feel like the final stop, leaving them asking, what comes next? Key Question: Who is the prisoner? and how does trauma shape every part of the system? In this talk I will explore trauma, humanity and responsibility within the prison environment, inviting new thinking about how we can support everyone who lives and works behind the walls.
